Things’ll Be Great When You’re Downtown

Downtown is dead. That’s what most people will tell you if you ask them about downtown Toledo. They will say that outside of Mud Hens or Walleye games, there’s nothing to do or see.

Au contraire, mon ami.

As a matter of fact, there is quite a bit of action happening Thursday and Friday evenings this week.

Etsy Craft Party (etsycraftpartytoledo.wordpress.com)

This is the first Etsy craft party to happen in Toledo. Area crafters and artisans will have their wares on display at Gallerie 333 (part of Toledo School for the Arts) as part of The Arts Commission of Greater Toledo’s Thursday Art Walk. Speaking of which…

Thursday Art Walk (www.acgt.org)

It’s the third Art Walk of the summer! The Art Walk gives area residents a prime opportunity to explore downtown Toledo and visit locally owned galleries and business as well as purchase and support area artists. The Art Walk takes place between 6 – 9 pm. A map of the participating galleries and other spaces can be found here.

Art Depo Grand Opening (artsupplydepo.com)

Also folded in with the Art Walk is the grand opening of a new art supply store in the Warehouse District. I have been looking forward to the opening of this store for months and can’t wait to visit! RSVP for their grand opening party on Facebook.

Downtown SoundTrek (www.acgt.org)

Another brand new event! Downtown Toledo will be turned into an audial smorgasbord this Friday. Thirteen venues will be hosting non-stop musical treat, featuring over 30 live musical acts —  rock, pop,  hip-hop, folk and bluegrass, blues, jazz, country, DJ & dance music.

Wristbands are $15 through Thursday, $20 the day of. You can purchase wristbands online or at any of the participating venues:

  • Attic on Adams
  • The Blarney Bullpen
  • Bozarts Gallery
  • Bretz
  • Glass City Café
  • Manhattans Restaurant
  • Ottawa Tavern
  • Pizza Papalis
  • Table Forty4
  • Toledo School for the Arts
  • Toledo City Paper
  • Truth Art Gallery
  • Wesley’s Bar

Downtown SoundTrek runs from 7 PM – 1 AM. More info on the event can be found here. RSVP for SoundTrek on Facebook.

Shopping Local: Crave Jewelry Design

I’ve long admired Crave Jewelry. Actually, her shop on Etsy was my first introduction to the site. Her designs are fun, whimsical and a little edgy. For example, take a look at this little sterling silver brontosaurus necklace. I want him.

To see more Crave Jewelry, visit her Etsy shop: Crave Jewelry Design.

Crave Jewelry Designs is also on Facebook!

UPDATED: Coincidently, Crave has a deal today on Heartsy. $18 for $42 Online Store Credit.

My Favorite Things (This Week)

I’ve been infected. No, not infected like some of those Losties over on The Island. I have spring fever — bad. Don’t get me wrong. I’m not one of those people who curses cold temps and gray skies. I relish them. The more snow the better. You don’t want to know how many knit hats with ear flaps I own.

There is just something about spring time in the city. After hibernating for months, Chicago comes alive. Free concerts at Pritzker Pavilion. Beer gardens and eating brunch outside. Visits to the dog beach. Did I mention flip flops? I wear a pair from May until September.

How was I able to diagnose my fever? My picks for this week’s “My Favorite Things” post clued me in. Just take a look!

I ❤ this band. One of my favorite parts about my previous career was working with developing labels and bands like these guys. There’s nothing flashy about this video but I think that’s the beauty of it. You really focus on the music and get drawn into the sound. I picture myself driving down Lake Shore Drive, windows down and listening to their self-titled debut (cranked up to 11, of course).

Yellow Branches Reuseable Lunch Bag

I pack my lunch every day. While my snacks are nicely organized (thanks Pyrex!), they get tossed into whatever plastic grocery bag I can find. Usually, it’s a nice white and red Target bag. I think it’s time I invest in something a bit more attractive. What do you think?

Dog Holder Hanger

Thanks to Google Buzz, my friend Michelle shared with me a new blog — Dog Milk. Dog culture PLUS modern design? She knows me too well. This pup can hold more than just a couple of tea bags. He was designed by Soon Mo Kang. My iDog does need a friend…

Rosedbud Belt In Marigold

Apparently I wasn’t the only one who fell in love with this belt. Mere hours after I added it to my list, it was sold out! Visit heartofight’s Etsy shop and browse around.

Spring Chick Necklace

This must be an off week for me. Another Etsy find sold out before I had a chance to purchase.

My Favorite Things (This Week)

Screenprint from Etsy seller beethings.

Looking at this makes me 1) want to go swimming and 2) chow down on some Goldfish crackers. In all seriousness, beethings has a lot of adorable nature screenprints for sale. Check ’em out!

New Pornographers “Your Hands (Together)”

New tunes from one of my favorite bands. Yes!

I’m a Dog Person T-shirt

Truer words have never been spoken, not that I need a t-shirt to make this declaration. I’m pretty sure strangers already know this about me when they see stray white and black fur on my coat, scarf, sweater, etc.

An acrylic painting from Etsy seller Ummimi.

Bold lines, warm colors and floral patterns. I want it. Now.

For my fellow font nerds:

Be sure to visit The League of Moveable Type for more open source fonts.

Tofino, British Columbia

I want to go to there…

My Favorite Things (This Week)

Will you take a look at that. A post that isn’t an apology for my lack of posting. Wowza. I spend a lot of time on the interwebs and when I say a lot, I really mean a lot. So I figured, why not share with you some of the gems I find. Ladies and gentlemen, I’d like to present (what I hope will be) a weekly post titled, My Favorite Things.

Watercolor was probably my favorite medium back in my high school art classes. It was a hobby that I continued during college. I love how the blotches of color dissect the construction of the subject.

I’m a houseplant addict. Without Jeff around, our home would probably look like a small greenhouse. These terrariums are just adorable, aren’t they?

Recycled Glass Terrarium (via Design*Sponge)

Blame it on the continually gray skies and dirty snow that have plagued the city for the past month or so but this wreath? I covet it. However, I would more than likely hurt myself trying to hang it (I’ve mentioned that I am kind of accident prone, right?).

Credit Card Wreath (via biz miss)

New music, everyone! The latest album from Ted Leo and The Pharmacists drops March 9. In the meantime, take a listen to “The Mighty Sparrow,” the first single from The Brutalist Bricks. It’s classic Ted Leo, complete with catchy hooks and stellar songwriting. Kudos, Ted (and his band of pharmacists).

New Ted Leo!

If you haven’t seen King of Kong, you probably won’t be as excited by this little bit of news as I am. Congrats, Steve Wiebe!

New high score!

Today We Like

J, the pooches and I are heading back to Ohio this weekend.  Oh joy!  The drive between Toledo and Chicago could quite possibly be the most boring. drive. ever. I am pretty sure I could do it with my eyes closed at this point. Anyhoo, the reason for this weekend’s travels is my sister-in-law’s baby shower.  That’s right, I am going to be an aunt. Let me rephrase that. I am going to be an aunt to a human nephew. I already have two canine nephews that I spoil rotten.

Shower gifts have already been purchased but that hasn’t stopped me from (internet) window shopping.  And even though this has a subtle “girly” feel to it, today we like:

How adorable is that?  Etsy seller JAustinRyan has a whole collection of paintings featuring some of the most adorable renditions of a whole assortment of fauna.  Head on over to her blog, J.AustinRyan, and learn more about Hawk the Suburban Dog and his friends.
