Ninety Seven Days

Yes. It’s been ninety-seven days since my last post. Unacceptable, I know. And I really don’t have a good reason or excuse to explain away my absence. There were/are some big changes going on at the office which have taken up a lot of my time. Unfortunately, postings will continue to be sporadic over the summer months. With work, a couple of weddings out-of-state and (fingers crossed!) a couple big life changes in the works, it will be hard to squeeze in as many posts as I would like.

To make it up to you, I’m giving away a few images (designed by yours truly) that can be tiled for your desktop, Twitter background, etc.

Picnic Blanket

Picnic Blanket

These patterns were inspired by one of my favorite summer activities in Chicago.  Most Monday evenings, Jeff and I head down to Millenium Park with a bag full of snacks, a blanket and six-pack of some Goose Island brew and enjoy a free concert courtesy of the Downtown Sound Series at the Jay Pritzker Pavilion. Last year, our ears were treated to performances from The Sea and Cake, Dirty Projectors and Shellac to name a few. This year’s series kicked off three weeks ago with The Ponys and Besnard Lakes. She + Him played last Monday to a packed crowd. I have been anxiously awaiting tomorrows concert: Great Lake Swimmers. And! In two weeks: The Thermals with Disappears. Can’t wait!

Mixed Tape Monday!

Phew, what a weekend! You can read about our Friday and Saturday antics over at sowonderfulsomarvelous. Great food and wine taste better when they are shared with dear friends.

Sunday turned into one of those days where you make a list of things to accomplish and you end up crossing nothing off your list. I spent a decent chunk just staring at my sewing machine, searching for the inspiration to finish a project. However, I did manage to put together a playlist. Here are just a handful of tracks (with links!) that helped make my weekend fly by.

What do you have in store for this week? Me, I’m hoping that some hardware I ordered shows up before Friday. I will finish these dog collars.

Oh, and someone’s birthday is coming up. Do you have any suggestions on what to get a 30 something gadget geek for his birthday? I need all the help I can get.

My Favorite Things (This Week)

I’ve been infected. No, not infected like some of those Losties over on The Island. I have spring fever — bad. Don’t get me wrong. I’m not one of those people who curses cold temps and gray skies. I relish them. The more snow the better. You don’t want to know how many knit hats with ear flaps I own.

There is just something about spring time in the city. After hibernating for months, Chicago comes alive. Free concerts at Pritzker Pavilion. Beer gardens and eating brunch outside. Visits to the dog beach. Did I mention flip flops? I wear a pair from May until September.

How was I able to diagnose my fever? My picks for this week’s “My Favorite Things” post clued me in. Just take a look!

I ❤ this band. One of my favorite parts about my previous career was working with developing labels and bands like these guys. There’s nothing flashy about this video but I think that’s the beauty of it. You really focus on the music and get drawn into the sound. I picture myself driving down Lake Shore Drive, windows down and listening to their self-titled debut (cranked up to 11, of course).

Yellow Branches Reuseable Lunch Bag

I pack my lunch every day. While my snacks are nicely organized (thanks Pyrex!), they get tossed into whatever plastic grocery bag I can find. Usually, it’s a nice white and red Target bag. I think it’s time I invest in something a bit more attractive. What do you think?

Dog Holder Hanger

Thanks to Google Buzz, my friend Michelle shared with me a new blog — Dog Milk. Dog culture PLUS modern design? She knows me too well. This pup can hold more than just a couple of tea bags. He was designed by Soon Mo Kang. My iDog does need a friend…

Rosedbud Belt In Marigold

Apparently I wasn’t the only one who fell in love with this belt. Mere hours after I added it to my list, it was sold out! Visit heartofight’s Etsy shop and browse around.

Spring Chick Necklace

This must be an off week for me. Another Etsy find sold out before I had a chance to purchase.

My Favorite Things (This Week)

Screenprint from Etsy seller beethings.

Looking at this makes me 1) want to go swimming and 2) chow down on some Goldfish crackers. In all seriousness, beethings has a lot of adorable nature screenprints for sale. Check ’em out!

New Pornographers “Your Hands (Together)”

New tunes from one of my favorite bands. Yes!

***

I’m a Dog Person T-shirt

Truer words have never been spoken, not that I need a t-shirt to make this declaration. I’m pretty sure strangers already know this about me when they see stray white and black fur on my coat, scarf, sweater, etc.

An acrylic painting from Etsy seller Ummimi.

Bold lines, warm colors and floral patterns. I want it. Now.

I want to go to there…

WFMU Needs Your Help!

I am going to step on my soapbox for a minute so please bear with me.  WFMU-FM is a listener-supported, non-commercial radio station broadcasting at 91.1 Mhz FM in Jersey City, NJ, right across the Hudson from lower Manhattan. It is currently the longest running freeform radio station in the United States.

Due to a series of unfortunate events (the current recession, falling short of their spring fundraising campaign, losing their main transmitter), they are hosting a 24 hour donation marathon starting at 7:00 PM November 17. The goal is to raise enough funds to keep the turntables spinning and the tunes playing through the winter.

Rolling Stone Magazine, The Village Voice, CMJ and the New York Press have all at one time or another called WFMU “the best radio station in the country.” WFMU’s programming ranges from flat-out uncategorizable strangeness to rock and roll, experimental music, 78 RPM Records, jazz, psychedelia, hip-hop, electronica, hand-cranked wax cylinders, punk rock, gospel, exotica, R&B, radio improvisation, cooking instructions, classic radio airchecks, found sound, dopey call-in shows, interviews with obscure radio personalities and notable science-world luminaries, spoken word collages, Andrew Lloyd Webber soundtracks in languages other than English as well as Country and western music.

Times are hard for everyone, no question about that. However, if you are a fan of independent music please consider making a donation. The role WFMU has played is immeasurable and to lose this gem would be a travesty.  WFMU receives no corporate or government funding.

For more information about the station, please visit: www.wfmu.org

And, if you would like to make a donation (and score some sweet swag), go to: www.wfmu.org/marathon/pledge.php
